Frequently Asked Questions (OmniRing)
General
What is the PageFlip OmniRing?
The PageFlip OmniRing is a Bluetooth remote control ring. Unlike handheld clickers or foot pedals, the OmniRing is a discreet wearable device resting comfortably on your finger. The ring acts like a Bluetooth keyboard by emitting a key press with each tap of its two buttons. Any app that is responsive to key presses will respond to the ring. The programmable buttons can be engaged in single-press or double-press mode to trigger up to four app actions. In addition, the user can long-press a button to trigger a stream of key presses as long as the button is pressed. This is useful for continuous page turning, scrolling, volume control, and more. Any multi-key combination or hotkey can be assigned to the OmniRing buttons via the intuitive PageFlip iOS/Android app.
Who stands to benefit from the PageFlip OmniRing?
Guitarists, vocalists, drummers, marching bands, horn players, and musicians who prefer an alternative to foot pedals can now trigger page turns directly from a ring on their finger. Slide presentations and multimedia control can also be done effortlessly without holding a clicker or reaching for the computer screen or keyboard as the speaker can roam across the stage or classroom. OmniRing turns familiar keyboard commands into effortless fingertip control. The PageFlip OmniRing is a wonderful accessory for musicians, avid readers, and is also useful in many hands-free applications including teleprompters, medical apps, and finger-activated computer control.
How do I pair the OmniRing to my tablet/computer?
Press and hold both ring buttons simultaneously for at least two seconds to initiate pairing with a new Bluetooth device. Release when the name of the ring appears in the list of Bluetooth devices that are available for pairing. Select the ring name and confirm to complete the pairing. You will notice that the ring LED will blink once every four seconds when the ring is paired, whereas it blinks once every second while the ring is unpaired and in Bluetooth discovery mode. This pairing procedure only needs to be performed once when a connection is first established between the ring and the tablet. If you wish to pair the ring with another tablet, it is best to first unpair the ring from the current tablet before proceeding to pair with a new tablet. On iPads, press the "i" next to the ring name and select "Forget This Device" to unpair. NOTE: if your ring does not appear on the Bluetooth list even after pressing both buttons simultaneously, please try turning off Bluetooth on your tablet and then turning it back on to pair again. If that still doesn't work, please confirm that the ring is charged. Insert the ring in the charging case, if necessary.
What is the default name of the OmniRing on the tablet?
On the tablet's Bluetooth screen, the ring will appear as "PageFlip OmniRing" in the list of Bluetooth devices. Please note that the name of the ring can be changed using the PageFlip iOS/Android app.
Why is the OmniRing not turning pages?
Confirm that your ring is paired to your tablet or computer and that the ring is set to the correct key press as you engage the ring with a single-press or double-press. You will notice the ring LED blinks once every four seconds if the ring is properly paired. The ring acts like a Bluetooth keyboard and emits a keypress each time a ring button is pressed. The ring setting in the PageFlip app determines which key press is emitted. Some page turner software may require arrow keys while others may require PageUp/PageDown or other keystrokes. Try several key press settings until you find one that works. The default PageUp/PageDown single-press mode works for most applications. If you reprogrammed the ring buttons, press "Default Settings" in the PageFlip app to reset to factory defaults. Note for unrealBook, Ultimate Guitar, and GoodReader users on the iPad: please refer to the Apps section of the FAQ for specific app settings. iPad users may also want to consult the "Why is my ring no longer working with compatible iOS apps"? in the Apps section.
How is the OmniRing powered?
The PageFlip OmniRing is designed to sip very little power so a fully charged ring will last for 13 hours of continuous use. This is equivalent to many days of use. The battery power of the ring is displayed in the PageFlip app. The approximate battery level is also indicated by the number of LEDs that are lit while the ring is in the unplugged charging case. The ring will emit a triple flash LED warning every two seconds to signal a low-battery warning, but you will still have a couple of hours of use before the battery will be fully depleted. Place the ring in the charging case and wait up to one hour to fully charge the ring.
What is the benefit of single- and double-press on the OmniRing?
The two buttons on the PageFlip OmniRing can emit different key presses depending on whether it is single- or double-pressed. This offers four different key presses that can be emitted by the ring. Although two such key presses are often used for turning pages forwards or backwards, the other two key presses are important as well. This feature is a game-changer for those musicians who need an extra key press to trigger a quick jump to another page for repeats (e.g., D.S., Coda). It works great with the Link function in the forscore or MobileSheets app. See it in action in the "Handling Repeats in forscore with the Dragonfly" video. The OmniRing offers the benefits of the PageFlip Dragonfly quad pedal mounted to a wearable ring.
Hardware
Does the OmniRing work with iPad and Android tablets?
Yes, the PageFlip OmniRing works with all iPad and Android tablets supporting Bluetooth BLE. This generally applies to all tablets made after 2013. However, the ring only works with apps that accept keyboard commands. The most popular compatible iPad apps are Forscore, OnSong, MobileSheets. Piascore, and Newzik. The most popular compatible Android apps are MobileSheets, SongBook Pro, Musescore, nkoda, and ezPDF Reader. The Kindle app on the tablets are also compatible. Click here for the full list of compatible apps. The list of compatible software is sure to grow. Check back here for updates. If you need to use the pedal with an incompatible iOS app, please follow these instructions.
Does the OmniRing work with Surface tablets and all Windows/Mac software?
Yes. The PageFlip OmniRing emulates a keyboard that emits key presses. The pedal's emitted signals are determined by the ring settings as shown in the PageFlip app. Any page turner software on a computer or tablet (e.g., Surface Pro) running Windows or MacOS will be able to interpret these key presses, whether they were triggered by pressing the ring buttons or any computer keyboard. Try the PageFlip OmniRing with MobileSheets, Power Music, or Kindle software on Windows.
Does the pedal work with Kindle devices?
The PageFlip OmniRing works with Kindle Fire HD but not Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle Scribe. An optional PageFlip OmniClip (available in 2027) can work alongside the OmniRing for page turning on Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Scribe devices. Simply place the OmniClip along the center of the top edge of the Kindle device and pair the OmniClip to the OmniRing to respond to OmniRing button presses for bidirectional page turning. Please note that the OmniRing works with Kindle software for the PC, Mac, iOS, and Android.
Can I connect the OmniRing to multiple iPads?
The OmniRing can only be connected to one iPad at a time via Bluetooth. It is possible, though, to allow one ring to control several iPads via software. The forscore iPad app, for instance, has a Cue function that allows users to automatically coordinate page turns and program changes so everyone is literally on the same page. Cue permits one iPad to be registered as the "leader" and send signals to one or more "followers." It uses both WiFi and Bluetooth to discover and communicate with nearby devices, and performance may vary based on environmental factors. Please consult the forscore manual at https://forscore.co/user-guides/.
Apps
Which apps work with the OmniRing?
The PageFlip OmniRing works with any app that responds to PageUp/PageDown or arrow key presses. A list of compatible apps can be found here. In general, if the app works with a Bluetooth keyboard, it will work with the OmniRing.
Can the OmniRing be used with non-compatible iOS apps?
The OmniRing works with any app that understands the key presses that are emitted by the ring (e.g., arrow keys). Non-compatible apps require a swiping motion instead of key presses. Please follow these instructions to allow the ring to mimic a swiping motion for use with non-compatible apps.
Why is my OmniRing no longer working with compatible iOS apps?
For those customers with iPad Pro and the new Magic Keyboard accessory, there is an accessibility setting that you may choose to use called “Full keyboard access.” When this setting is enabled, all other accessories using computer keyboard profiles (including the PageFlip OmniRing) are either ignored or the signals are swallowed up by iOS and not reported to the app. Turning this setting off restores functionality between the device and the app.
Why is the OmniRing not turning pages on the unrealbook app?
Confirm that your ring is paired to your tablet or computer and that the Up/Down arrow mode is set on the ring. This is indicated in the PageFlip app for the desired single-press or double-press mode. Then, make sure you go to the unrealbook app's settings (tap the gear icon) and set Network->Airturn Setup->Airturn Support to ON. By default, AirDirect is set to ON. Make sure to turn it off by selecting Keyboard since the ring acts like a keyboard. A checkmark should now appear next to Keyboard. NextSong switches should be left OFF. The unrealbook app will then respond to the Up/Down Arrow keys.
Why is the OmniRing not turning pages on the Ultimate Guitar app?
Confirm that your ring is paired to your tablet or computer and that the Up/Down arrow mode is set on the ring. This is indicated in the PageFlip app for the desired single-press or double-press mode. Then, open the Ultimate Guitar app's Account & Settings->Pedal interface and set Airturn Settings->Keyboard to ON. By default, AirDirect is set to ON. Make sure to turn it off by selecting Keyboard since the ring acts like a keyboard. A checkmark should now appear next to Keyboard. Then, go back to the pedal interface menu, press "Set up" next to "Scroll tab down" and press one ring button. Repeat for "Scroll tab up" and press the other ring button. The Ultimate Guitar app will then respond to the Up/Down Arrow keys. In addition, the ring won't connect with the app if Full Keyboard Access is enabled. To disable this setting, go to Accessibility -> Keyboards & Typing -> Full Keyboard Access.
Why is the OmniRing not turning pages on the GoodReader app?
Confirm that your ring is paired to your tablet or computer and that the Up/Down arrow mode is set on the ring. This is indicated in the PageFlip app for the desired single-press or double-press mode. Then, make sure to activate the "page lock" mode in GoodReader. This permits you to turn pages in a PDF file with a Bluetooth pedal, ring, or keyboard. This icon is located at the bottom of the screen, near the right-hand side. It looks like a lock with arrows on each of its four sides. More information about this Lock Page mode is available in the GoodReader PDF Buttons and Control section of the manual.
Why is the OmniRing not turning pages on the MusicNotes app?
Starting with iOS 15.1 and iPadOS 15.1, Apple modified how the Operating System handles external keyboards, in conjunction with Accessibility settings and controls. With this update, a Bluetooth ring that emits arrow keys will cycle a cursor through the various buttons when you are viewing a song, rather than turning pages. Please follow the 9-step set of instructions given at the bottom of the MusicNotes support page to solve this problem.
Why is the OmniRing not turning pages on the SongbookPro app?
Confirm that your ring is paired to your tablet or computer and that the Up/Down arrow mode is set on the ring. This is indicated in the PageFlip app for the desired single-press or double-press mode. Then, consult the SongbookPro support page to get the pedal to trigger your desired actions.
OmniRing Settings and LEDs
How do I reprogram or view the OmniRing settings?
Download the free iOS/Android PageFlip app from PageFlip, Inc. on the App Store or Google Play Store to reprogram the PageFlip OmniRing. The app allows you to map arbitrary key presses, multi-key combinations, Fn keys, and media keys to the two ring buttons under single-press, double-press, and long-press modes. You can also reconfigure the ring name and change the timeout period. Once a ring is reprogrammed, it can be used with any tablet or computer. Press the Default Settings button in the PageFlip app to revert back to factory settings. Please refer to the OmniRing manual or our online videos for more details.
What are the different operating conditions signified by the OmniRing LEDs?
When the ring is in the charging case, a solid LED means that the ring is charging. If the LED is off, the ring is fully charged. If the ring is not in the charging case, the following applies. The LED is off while the ring is in sleep mode. The LED blinks once per second if the ring is discoverable but not yet paired. The LED blinks once every four seconds if the ring is paired and connected to a Bluetooth device. A triple flash every two seconds indicates a low-battery warning. You still have a couple of hours before the ring must be recharged.
What are the different operating conditions signified by the charging case LEDs?
When the charging case is connected to a power source via a USB-C cable, the number of LEDs that are on indicate the battery capacity of the charging case. If no LEDs are on, there is no battery input. If one LED is on, there is 0%-25% battery level in the charging case and it is charging. Similarly, if 2, 3, or 4 LEDs are on, that indicates the charging case is being charged and its battery capacity is at 25%-50%, 50%-75%, and 75%-100%, respectively. If the ring is in the charging case and the case is unplugged, the LEDs indicate the battery capacity of the ring itself. An imminent ring shutdown due to less than 3% power is indicated if the case has no solid LEDs on. One solid LED indicates 3%-25% battery level in the ring, and charging is highly recommended. Two solid LEDs indicate that the ring is being charged and there is 25%-50% battery capacity in the ring. Three and four solid LEDs indicate 50%-75% and 75%-100%, respectively, of battery capacity in the ring.
Bluetooth
What do I do if Bluetooth pairing is unsuccessful?
Reset Bluetooth on your tablet/computer by turning it off and then turning it on again and attempt to perform Bluetooth pairing again. If that doesn't work, delete the device displayed in the host and press both ring buttons simultaneously. Initial discovery mode may take up to 10 seconds. Follow your computer's instructions on how to pair Bluetooth devices. Also, please make sure to charge your ring in the charging case.
Is it necessary to pair the OmniRing each time I use it with the same device?
No, you must only pair the ring once to a Bluetooth device. There is no need to pair it again once you turn on the ring or device again. If you find that the ring loses its pairing, then contact customer support. The only time you need to pair the ring again with a device is if you paired the ring to another device in the interim. The ring only remembers one pairing at a time.
Can the OmniRing work with computers that have no Bluetooth?
Yes. To maintain wireless Bluetooth connectivity, simply plug in an optional USB Bluetooth dongle into the computer's USB port. The dongle is available here in the PageFlip online store. Follow your computer's instructions for adding Bluetooth devices.
Do I need to use a Bluetooth dongle?
The dongle is only needed if you are using the ring with a tablet or computer that does not support Bluetooth LE. Note that the dongle is never needed for any version of iPads or Macs since they all have Bluetooth support. Windows and Linux computers may come without integrated Bluetooth support so they are the only candidates for using the dongle. Dongles can be purchased here in the PageFlip online store.
Auto Repeat and Shutoff
Why did the OmniRing automatically shut down?
In an attempt to preserve battery life, the ring enters sleep mode after an inactivity period of 30 minutes. Tapping a ring button will make the unit attempt to re-establish the Bluetooth connection. This may take a few seconds. The inactivity period may be reprogrammed using the iOS/Android PageFlip app. You will know that the ring is asleep if the ring LED is off. If the ring is awake and paired, the ring LED will blink once every four seconds. It is advisable to tap the ring once and verify that it turns pages when you want to use it after a long delay lasting over 30 minutes, or however long the inactivity period has been set.
When is the Autorepeat mode appropriate?
The PageFlip OmniRing features a long-press autorepeat mode that can be used to emit a rapid succession of commands as long as the ring button is pressed down. Use the long-press autorepeat mode if you are interested in fast browsing or scrolling. Either single-press or double-press the ring buttons to avoid multiple pages from turning at once if you inadvertently press the button too long. Please note that the autorepeat feature of a long-press only takes effect after 0.5 seconds of holding down the ring button. It is therefore best to avoid the long-press option during a performance unless you are reasonably sure to perform quick presses of the ring buttons.
Can the OmniRing turn pages at timed intervals?
No. The PageFlip OmniRing turns a page only when the user triggers it by pressing a ring button.
Virtual Keyboard
Can I use the virtual keyboard and the OmniRing at the same time on the iPad?
Click both buttons simultaneously to hide/eject the virtual keyboard. After you first eject the virtual keyboard, you will be able to access the virtual keyboard to enter text whenever you need it for the duration of your session. Test it by tapping into a text field and confirming that the virtual keyboard appears on the screen.
Can I use the virtual keyboard and the OmniRing at the same time on an Android tablet?
On an Android tablet (e.g., Samsung Galaxy Tab series), go to Settings->General Management->Language and Input -> Physical Keyboard and turn on Show Virtual Keyboard. Use Samsung keyboard as the default.
Digital Sheet Music
Where can I find digital sheet music to download?
The best source for free classical music is the International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP) at imslp.org. Extensive collections of popular music can be found at onlinesheetmusic.com, sheetmusicdirect.com, musicnotes.com, sheetmusicscore.com, or everynote.com. CD Sheet Music from halleonard.com is a great source of scanned classical music conveniently available on CDs. Search the internet for "sheet music download" to get updated results.
How do I import my books or sheet music into my computer?
You must scan the physical pages. For best results, try to avoid the shadows near the book spine by using a flatbed book scanner such as the Plustek OpticBook 3600. Visit www.plustek.com for more details. A more cost-effective solution is to use a great new service provided by 1dollarscan.com. Simply mail them your books, and they will cut off the binding and scan the loose pages at 300dpi for $1.20 per set of 100 sheets. Additional charges apply for scanning at 600dpi or to apply a deskewing algorithm. Visit 1dollarscan.com for more information. Please note that this is a destructive process. You will get a pdf file for each book you send but you will sacrifice your book in the process. They discard the book after chopping off the binding and scanning the pages.
